National Cancer Survivor Day- Lauren's Story

In 2011, my mom was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer at the age of 40. For four years, I watched her struggle through many different treatments just trying to give us more time together. Those four years were exhausting for me, I could not imagine what it was like for my mother. After her passing in 2015, I told myself that I would do everything in my power to ensure I never have to go through what my mom went through. Although her diagnosis was clearly not her doing, all of the research that we did to change our lifestyle during her fight taught us that it’s not only important to think about what you put in your body, but what you put on your body. I became really good at looking at the foods that I ate, medications that I took, and anything else I was consuming. I was making the switch to items that would help me live a healthier lifestyle. Although I felt good about this change, I was forgetting other things that I was doing to my body every single day, my beauty products!

There are a lot (and when I say a lot, I mean MILLIONS) of beauty products in today's market, everything from shampoo, conditioners, makeup, scrubs, masks and more. I never really paid attention to what was in these products, all I knew was that they worked and I liked them. My only hang up was that everything I used was mildly irritating my skin. I was always red, some made me itch, or my skin was so angry it was peeling off! It wasn’t new, I had lived like that for a long time and I thought it was normal. It wasn’t until I learned that there are products on the market that aren’t full of harsh chemicals, ones that don’t irritate sensitive skin and the simple fact that I could make the switch. I was extremely skeptical, honestly, I didn’t think they would work or work as well. But I decided to buck up and reminded myself of the promise I made to do whatever I could to not go through what

my mom went through. I began to switch out my old products with natural organic products that had no harmful ingredients.

I was SO wrong to think they wouldn't work. My deodorant smells amazing while it works like a charm, my makeup doesn’t clog my pores and doesn’t make me break out, my skincare products don’t make my skin red and irritated, my hair products help my hair look so shiny and soft (and even helped me to make the move to only wash my hair every four days!). I wish I would have made the switch sooner! The fact that there are really great products on the market that you can feel good about using and that don’t contain harmful chemicals is revolutionary. I'm incredibly excited for Ethos Day Spa to bring these products and services to Grand Rapids and the surrounding areas.
