Ethos is what happens when people who care about healing and wellness operate a Day Spa.
And massage is one of our most timeless, impactful, most ‘transformative’ therapies.
Why massage? And why in Grand Rapids?
For some, massage is a therapy for addressing muscle stiffness, tightness, pain or discomfort. For others, it’s a stress-relieving form of relaxation. And for many, massage is the gift of being actively cared for and the feeling of well-being that follows.
An Ethos Day Spa massage in Grand Rapids, Michigan is safe, touch-based whole health therapy. It benefits the whole person - physically, mentally, emotionally.
Massage therapists were originally known as “rubbers” because they would rub or knead a body with their hands. Though it doesn’t sound all that consequential, it’s quite remarkable that something so basic could be so powerfully and so positively changeful. Discover why pampering, the reason many or even most people seek out massage in Grand Rapids, is just the beginning of massage’s many benefits.

Ethos Day Spa & Massage in Grand Rapids presents: A uniquely brief history of massage therapy.
The ancient equivalent of medical doctors in India practiced and understood the healing power of manual therapy or massage as long ago as 3000 bce. Indian healers developed Ayurvedic massage to both prevent and heal illness.
As knowledge of massage traveled to China, practitioners developed a technique called Tui Na, intended to jump start the body’s healing process in addition to reducing pain and increasing relaxation. It was found to be harmonious with other ancient Chinese practices including yoga, the martial arts, and Taoist philosophy. The Yellow Emperor’s Classic Book of Internal Medicine, a tremendously influential ancient medical text, was reputedly written by Emperor Huangdi in around 2700 bce. This book, believed to be the first written evidence of massage therapy, is used in massage therapy training to this day.
Massage therapy next shows up in Egypt, depicted on the walls of tombs dating back 2500 bce. Egypt is the birthplace of Reflexology, a massage technique based on the interconnectedness of the body that addresses reflex points on the hands, feet, and head to treat pain or discomfort and illness in other parts of the body.
From Egypt, massage therapy spread to Japan where it evolved into Shiatsu in the 6th century, a massage technique designed to balance energy levels by manually applying pressure.
By 700 bce massage had found its way to Greece where Olympic athletes were massaged prior to competing. In Italy in the first century bce, the average Roman would get a massage at the baths, while the wealthier citizens would get massaged at home.
More recently in Europe, a doctor and educator in Sweden developed a massage technique in the 1800s that came to be known as Swedish massage, known for its long hand strokes.
Massage wasn’t practiced extensively in America until World War I when it was used to treat injured soldiers. In 1984, massage therapists once again treated and conditioned athletes using massage in the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, nearly three millennia after their ancient Greek predecessors.
"This is the best
spa in Grand Rapids
hands-down!
